3SOOOO SLOOOOOOW  May 18, 2011 By Sean
This unit looks great! Has a great interface (for the most part) and is pretty good at some things..... however its soooooo sloooooow!!
Every function from changing sources to navigating through any menu system takes time.... I even found the GPS to be sluggish.. I would turn onto a street and it would take 3 to 5 seconds or so to figure out that I even turned....
That was disappointing to me consider Garmin GPS was the reason I got the thing... also the EQ is terrible!! Its pretty hard to customize your sound to get it the way you want... and is definitely not easy to do and is quite time consuming...

Things that I did like was the flashy look of the interface... and the phone book was actually pretty decent... but however the fact that even this was sluggish made it frustrating going through it.
Its almost like Kenwood released a product thats processor is underpowered therefore making the entire unit too slow.

Its too bad actually because if it was more responsive it would be a really awesome unit.

I returned the 6180 and instead went with the Pioneer X930BT... and am pretty happy with it.... its extremely responsive (as soon as you press a button it does it) and the Ipod intergration is much better.
Also to my surprise I found the GPS to actually work better then the Garmin in the 6180?? Go figure... I always used Garmin but I guess Pioneer isn't that bad after all....

1BIG FAIL for Kenwood  Mar 08, 2012 By EuroDriver
I was looking for a good in-dash nav system for my wife's car, and the main features I was interested in were the ability to add Mexico maps and dual-zone audio for the kids in the back in our 4Runner. I settled on this unit because it had those features, plus the Lane Assist. I ended up purchasing 2 of them: one for my wife's car and one for mine. I liked those features, along with updatable maps and firmware, ipod & usb connectivity, sirrius, XM and Pandora -ready, rear cam option and so many other features. However, that's where the attraction ends. As it stands, I will be returning both units very shortly. My comments below reflect my experience after having these units for 2 weeks:

Although these units look great and are packed with features, they are seriously under-powered. My biggest gripes are that the nav and bluetooth are unreliable, the screen keeps freezing and it often reboots at random. From there, the list just keeps growing.

The GPS system is constantly running behind your actual position and seems to get confused a lot. It makes you take grossly longer and unnecessary routes than you need to. It will tell you to take a turn/exit, and then it will change its mind at the very last moment, or it will alert you after you have passed your turn/exit. This was not a one-time occasion: it has done so repeatedly. Other times, the voice guidance will be active, but the screen will freeze. Once it went completely dark, forcing me to shut it down, restart and re-enter the driving directions while driving (a long time to have eyes off the road).

The bluetooth constantly disconnects, often in the middle of a call. This is especially aggravating since we are in Southern California, where cell phone citations are a hot subject. My wife has given up altogether with bluetooth connectivity with her iphone. When a connection is established, it takes forever and a day for the contacts to load. Scrolling through them is so difficult, so it's just easier to pick up the phone and dial. When it receives text messages, it only displays 1-3 words of the message.

Radio reception is absolutely horrible. I had to install signal amplifiers in both cars and in mine, I then had to add a second antenna to get a decent level of reception. Then, you cannot manually enter a station or move to it - it just scans and if it does not pick up a strong signal, you will never be able to lock in your station into a preset.

The processor speed is painfully slow. There is often a noticeable pause between the time to press a selection and when it executes the command. The unit takes a considerable amount of time to boot up when you turn it on, and when you stop the engine - even if you leave the key in acc, when you restart the engine the unit will shut off and restart. It would not be so bad it if didn't take so long to boot up.

The size of the volume knob is comfortable, but the buttons above and below it are small and flush, and it takes a sustained press for the unit to recognize the command, which makes it very awkward to use them.

As far as the touch screen, I often end up touching my palm to the bottom of the screen to steady it while inputing a selection, which will cause the function to change - very frustrating. From the main menu, you get to scroll through quite a number of options, which is very distracting while driving - it should allow you to eliminate menu functions you do not use, or at least move them to a sub-menu.

Overall, the concept of this unit is great, but it is painfully obvious that it was inadequately designed. It reminds me of the chaos that AT&T had with the iphone - a great product with dismal service. At the price of this unit, it has been a huge disappointment for me. I have been using Kenwood products for many, many years (Kenwood headunits in all but 2 of my cars over the past 25 years) and for the first time, it has left a bad taste in my mouth. Big fail in my book. Kenwood should be offering full credit for exchange, or outright recall these units.

The upside of this unit is as I mentioned above, is the many great features, large touchscreen with easy-to-press virtual buttons, crisp video, visually appealing, clear voice over bluetooth (when it works), dual-zone audio, expandability and upgradeability. However, for the main functions I need, such as radio, nav and a movie player, I can buy a cheap headunit, a portable GPS navigator and portable movie player for less than half the money and still get much more reliable performance.

Keep in mind I have 2 of these units, so I'm convinced it's not just a fluke that I received a dud. I'm having largely the same issues with both. I am considering exchanging them for the excelon line DNX9990HD, which supposedly has addressed many of these issues but due to the absence of any significant reviews and huge jump in price as of this date, I am apprehensive to give Kenwood another shot. I will update my review to do a quick comparison with their replacements.

I thought about giving this unit a 2-star review, because the the features and options are very nice and quite appealing, especially since they are all in one bundle. However, I can't overlook the fact that if the unit cannot function reliably, what good are the features. More so when you take the cost of it into account.

5Great Unit  May 20, 2012 By jackson4264
I bought this unit at Best Buy and got great deal on it. I have read several reviews about how slow this unit was. I took a chance due to the price and free install on it and I'm glad I did. Like several people said this unit was very slow. The first thing I done was updated the software on it and it runs much faster now. Mine came with version 1.4. I downloaded the latest version 1.7 and this all took around 10 minutes to download and install. I love the interface built in this unit. My bluetooth connected and the phone works flawless. The GPS seems to work great too. My antenna is mounted on the front dash. There is a bluetooth software update on the Kenwood site but I did not have to update bluetooth software. EQ could be a little better but this unit is like most with only low, mid and high setting. I'm still new to it but so far it's run great. Any owners need to update the software. Your unit will run faster.

4awesome unit  Feb 01, 2012 By gastech
I had this unit installed in my 2001 F150 King Ranch. Previous reviews were talking about it being slow. It is not slow to me. Few seconds to boot up and thats it. I added rear camera, it all works awesome. The application chart will say it wont fit, but my audio guys said it would. It looks like it came from factory.
