4Receiver lags and freezes  Apr 10, 2011 By Hotpot
I just got it on my new car. The system freezes and lags. It is slow. It restarts all the time, and all around, it is just bad. I can't input 4 addresses into the GPS address book at one time. Once I do, it freezes and reboots. When I start my car, the map loads forever. And I have to restart the NAV to get it working. I went back to the dealer and tested the demo. The demo did the same thing. Model DNX9980HD performed well without these problems. I hope Kenwood has a software fix soon. Otherwise, I will have to go with another brand.

UPDATE - got an unofficial software fix and it seem to have resolved the issues. overall the receiver is a bit slow. a faster processor would be nice. love the garmin gps software. traffic works well when driving in la. bluetooth works great and everything else function as it should. bumping it up to 4 stars from previous 2 stars.

1Very slow and crashes while navigating  Jun 22, 2011 By Charles T. Howard "Taylor"
I cannot believe Kenwood released this head unit with the current hardware\firmware. It is very, very slow to respond to touch input. Selecting a track from a CD can take up to 5 seconds, and the system takes about 2-3 minutes to re-route a missed turn during navigation. Additionally, the unit has crashed twice on my while navigating. I used to be a big fan of Kenwood head units, but this unit's lack of performance and stability issues has really turned me off to the brand. For a product with a > $1000.00 MSRP, it is an insult that Kenwood released it to the market as-is.

1not recommended  Jun 14, 2011 By Andrew K. Putnam
Just got the dnx6980 about a month ago for my jeep. I would strongly suggest looking for a different unit. the system lags horrible, when it isn't locking up or restarting. The GPS has to recalculate routes every time you turn it on (which takes about 3 minutes)- clearly the processor is weak and can't be upgraded. they claim to have a software update out, but I can't locate it (Kenwood's website is not helpful, it directs you to garmin- which doesn't list the unit)
sound is ok, though less powerful than the factory unit.
ipod connection (hardwire) takes a minute to "read the ipod" each time you start up (and it has to launch the garmin).
overall, I'd give it an F- would take it back if I could.

4Great system  Nov 08, 2011 By S. Selby
I had this receiver installed at a custom shop and they did a bang up job.
Lets start with the pros
Pros
Easy to use
Has a knob for the volume
Bright screen
Easy to see large lettering
Very customizable my truck is white so i can use white lightning :)
Uses Garmin for the Nav system (very accurate)
You can connect a Hardrive with mp3s and mp4s on it and the system reads them :) i have a 750GB passport that works great

Now the cons
Cons
System is kinda slow (make sure to do the system upgrade its available on the website)
Cant customize the icons on the home screen.
Cant remove the Siruis and XM from home screen.

2Very good navi, UPDATE:not so good  Nov 13, 2011 By A worker
Bought this navi here and replaced DNX7120 on my 2007 Lexus ES350 3 weeks ago. Installation took a while since 7120 has a moveable panel so I was able to choose a proper angle with less glare and reflection but this 6980's panel is fixed, no way to adjust. I took the whole thing out, drilled holes on metal frame and made the navi vertically come forward some on the top and horizontally toward driver seat little. Now reflection is less.

I shopped around on a unit to replace 7120. I want a knob to turn volume easily. Pioneer X930BT is a good unit with friendly UI and it was 499 bucks after rebate last month. But the navigation is the main reason I chose DNX6980. I have installed newest software version 1.6. Now is my review on 6980,

1. UI
X930BT is little like an Apple product. 6980...you need time to get used to it. Kenwood really needs some efforts on this part. But once you go through that, no problem.
2. Navi
I like Garmin personally and 6980's navi is even better than 7120 so no complaints here. You can turn the screen to half-half. You use navi on left half and see the back thru rear camera or adjust audio on the right. The timing from engine started to navi map came out is 31 seconds. Still not fast but 5, 6 seconds faster than 7120.
3. iPod
I thought it's a direct control over USB. It's only 'controlled' by USB. There's no audio out. You need a KCA-IP202 cable, $30! Kenwood really wants to make money on their customers. This part is my primary dislike of 6980. I then bought the cable and installed it. My child's iPod Touch 4G works well, list and search both ok. Didn't test iPod too much though since I'm don't own iPod/iPhone.
4. USB
The starting search time is around 15 seconds. After that, change folder, track,... no problem.
5. Bluetooth
It connected to my Samsung phone every single time. No problem. Just like 7120, sound quality is very good to me and the other person.
6. Tuner
Reception is as good as 7120. Cannot compare with factory radio since the factory unit was replaced too long time ago.
7. Backup camera
6980 has big improve over 7120 on timing. After you turn on engine and shift to reverse gear, 1 to 2 seconds then the image shows. The trade off is audio takes around 8, 9 seconds to come out. But rear view is more important than audio at this moment, right?
8 Sound quality
6980 has 5V on all 3 pairs preamp out while 7120 is 2V. Signal power is higher, sound is more clear with some gain adjust on my Alpine PDX5.

One shortcoming here, 3.5mm aux-in is no more on 6180/6980 so if your device is using the 3.5mm, you need to find an alternative way such as USB.

During the 3 weeks my 6980 works pretty well, no lag, no freeze, touch screen responsive fast though I didn't go through all the features. Seemed now on Amazon 6980 got a price jump while 6180 dropped so the 6180 may have a a better C/P ratio but 6980 has 2 years warranty, 5V output, and a remote control. I would recommend both.
******************************************************************
UPDATES: After couple months' use, found the visibility is poor under sunshine and the revised user interface is worse than 7120. When it's a bright sunny day, basically the navi can be seen only when the screen is under shade. 7120 is not like that. Also 7120's UI is big and clear and in a higher contrast color scheme while 6980's is washed away under sunshine. Hardly to see. Now I miss 7120. No, I won't recommend 6x80.
