5kenwood kdc 448u  Jan 05, 2012 By wd9ewf
I read many reviews on this radio before buy it. I have no compaints on it performance. The menu is a little tricky to get use to and the manual is lacking a lot. I recommend going on line and getting the pdf manual at kenwood. Audio quality is good, plenty of power for even a truck. The selectable color is nice, I use the green to help in bright sun shine.I would recommend it to anyone wanting a low priced good quality radio with plenty bells and whistles.

3Nice sound, with limitations...  Feb 27, 2012 By Peter A., Luft "pl2"
I like this unit, generally, but the controls are a good example of everything Steve Jobs railed against: complexity (lots and lots of control options) vs. simplicity (ease of use). The best feature for me is that it will play off your USB stick, so you don't have to hook up your iPod each time you want to play your music. However, this unit will not read more than 255 folders (e.g. albums) per stick. HUH? What were they thinking? I have a 16Gb flash stick and was delighted that it would hold all of my current library. I loved that I could create my own categories, and unlike with the iPod, my compilation albums weren't split apart and scattered to the four winds, in one to four song segments. Then I discovered the last one third of the stick would not play - folder memory exceeded. Get real. Otherwise, everything said about the sound quality of this unit is true, and the price is pretty incredible.

2Good unit -if it weren't for the flaws  Mar 02, 2012 By _ws
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3NBX0BMCB3FZH Pros:

P1) Good sound quality. Improvement in sound for all media playback was noticeable over my old KDC-217, with entry-intermediate level aftermarket speakers (2.5"X2 front, 6.5"X2 back).

P2) Robust feature set. Highly customizable audio output options for more involved audio setups.

P3) Display colors & visibility. Display colors and effect are customizable. You can select one of the 20+ preset colors or input a RGB value. Display does well in direct sunlight (greens and blues more visible in sunlight than reds and yellows).

P4) Aux/USB input.

Cons:

C1) Clumsy interface/menu. Working the menus is confusing -especially because navigation and selection controls using the knob is inconsistent (e.g. 4-direction knob click and knob rotation used for selection in different instances). Furthermore, there are no preset radio buttons. You have to click the knob multiple times to get to a preset a few channels away, or use the remote (which requires two button presses to select a preset station). If you are decently tech savvy or young though, it's more a minor nuisance than a legitimate problem -but a nuisance nonetheless.

C2) iPod controls. Using the built-in search function for the unit is usable but clumsy when compared to the iPod's hand controls (especially since there're only 3 lines of text on display, as opposed the iPod's many lines). The receiver however, apparently does not allow for hand controls on some iPods even if the iPod is listed in the compatibility list (e.g. my 5G iPod /w Video 80GB). You should call Kenwood to check that the receiver allows for your iPod hand controls to stay active if you prefer that.

C3) Display text/scroll. You can select up to 3 types of information for each media source and longer strings of text will scroll across the screen, but the text appears to blink very quickly when scrolling, making them hard to read. Furthermore, in regards to the radio, the "Frequency" display is redundant with the "Radio Text" display; thus negating the option to have a constant indication of what frequency station you're tuned into if the radio station is broadcasting text information.

C4) Display reset (SERIOUS) problem. The display resets -yes, resets even when the receiver is on and running- abruptly when slight force is applied to the faceplate. I've gotten an exchange for this unit after purchase, but the second unit does the same thing. The problem seems to be worse when the unit is cold. If you purchase this unit from a supplier who's reluctant to cover this under Kenwood's manufacturer warranty of 1 year (like Central Buys -lackluster customer care in cases like this. I don't recommend them), you'll be stuck with a malfunctioning unit as shown in the videos below.[...]

All in all, I don't recommend that you purchase this unit unless you don't mind a clumsy interface, and the risk of getting stuck with a defective unit like I did (which can be minimized if you purchase from a good supplier. Not Central Buys). I'm using this unit now since I am stuck with it, but the display problem continues to bother me.

Edit: apparently Amazon doesn't allow Youtube links in reviews, so I've thrown the clip under "Video Review". In case that doesn't work either, search Youtube for "Kenwood KDC 448U Display Malfunction" to see my unit malfunctioning, and "Kenwood KDC-448U acting weird" for some other user's video of the same problem.

Edit2: Just some wording and grammar to clarify the text. Currently requesting directly to Kenwood, a warranty exchange on the unit. Will update again when accepted or denied.

Edit3: Update. I've contacted Kenwood and apparently, Central Buys is not an authorized seller of their products. Do not buy this product form them, since you'll be at their mercy if you receive a defective product. Now it makes sense why they won't offer to do a repair or anything.

5Great MultiColor CD Player with USB  Feb 21, 2012 By Stuart McRay Cattle
With a selectable color display and USB inputs for my android phone and flash drive disk for under 100 bucks I am very very happy... Radio reception is outstanding, way better than my JVC with HD radio, MP3/aux input sound quality is excellent with some nice EQ settings for such a reasonably priced headunit... would highly recommend

599% Perfect!!  Apr 28, 2012 By CJean
I bought this a few months ago because I wanted to use my ipod in my car without annoying radio transmitters. I figured I would use it for a while to give a better review. Overall, i absolutely love this stereo!!

Pros:
-I am very satisfied with the quality of the hardware.
-I love the color changing abilities (24 options!!) and all the different settings, even though Im still not quite used to how to get to all of them exactly yet.
-CD player works really well
-Sound is awesome, and very customizable for every taste in many combinations of treble, middle, and bass levels
-Charges ipod when plugged into USB
-Customizable screen displays, you can choose 3 different things for the screen, like title, album, artist, clock, song time, those sweet moving bass level bars, etc
-Remote
-Removable face plate in case you park somewhere where stereos get stolen, includes a soft pouch to put it in
-Very sleek and modern looking

Cons:
1.This first one is more of just a preference thing: I didn't want a stereo with a bunch of buttons on the front, so this one is perfect, expcept I now realize how much I wish I had buttons like next track, and pause. The remote has all of those features, but its a little distracting while driving, as well as using the "ipod by hand" mode, but i find using the ipod itself is less distracting than the remote, but then you have to give up being able to see the song names display on the screen. And thats just a minor issue that I can live with.
2.Even though it's obvious nothing is made for very cold weather, I was a little dissapointed in the fact that when it was very cold outside, the stereo kind of stalls a bit until it gets warmed up, and I know this would be with any electronic when its below freezing out and the stereo is in the cold car for long periods of time. This only happened once so far so I hope it doesn't continue to happen when it gets cold again next winter. If you don't live up north in like ND or MT, don't worry about this issue!
3. Every so often it doesn't read my ipod, but it's not been a huge issue because as soon as you re-plug it in, it always works. I think its also partly my ipod because it has its own issues, and I did have to get a new cord and that works better. I love love love how it charges the ipod when its connected through the USB, therefore I prefer using the USB, but using the auxillary plug would probably work just as well but wouldnt charge it.

These are just some very minor issues I have noticed, it has been nothing that caused me any great deal of frustration. Im sure those minor issues wouldnt be a problem with a more expensive stereo because you always get what you pay for, but I would definitely recommend this stereo if you don't wanna spend a whole lot of money but still want a great stereo!!!
