Pros: Does what it's supposed to, just barely.

Cons: The sound quality is terrible. The volume ends up being much, much lower than the rest of your radio stations. So much so that I need to turn my volume up about 90% to match a normal radio station at 10%.

Part of the problem is that the source volume (your mp3 player or whatever) needs to be turned way down or else the sound clips terribly. Music with lot of high frequency sounds (snare drums, cymbals, distorted guitars, etc.) really highlight this issue.

The bass does not come through much at all. Music sounds flat and I find myself adjusting the volume very frequently as the amplification does not seem to be very linear, e.g. soft stuff is really soft and loud stuff is really loud.

I also get a lot of ground loop noise (a whine that changes pitch with engine speed) which is made much worse by need for cranking up the volume on my stereo. This problem gets 100 times worse when I plug mp3 player into the charger. It's simply not possible to charge my mp3 player while listening to it, which is a huge pain. This could be a problem with my installation but I've had no such issues with other equipment so I'm leaning towards it not being my fault.

Conclusion: Do not buy this piece of junk. I know several people with different modulators and not one of them sounds anywhere near as awful as this. At some point I'll replace mine with one that actually works and this thing will get smashed to pieces before going in the garbage.

5Works great.  Jul 26, 2008
Installed this for my wife for her mp3 player; works perfectly.
Includes an on/off switch, but she never uses it.

Very little static, works quite a bit better than other FM modulators we've tried.

Just buy a RCA to 1/8" 6' cord, run the cord to where you'll be using it, and you're set.

Easy to install, too.

with the cost of radios, with direct connections, going down, this is old technology. i have it on my old jeep and it works much better than the older modulators. almost like a direct connect. if you have the time, patience, and no money for a new radio, then this works great. if you have $100, spend it on an aftermarket radio with a direct aux input connection.

4Works well for me.  Jun 22, 2007
Note: The unit I received the PLMD 2, does not look like the picture shown on this page.

It worked well, took about a half hour to install (and most of that time was spent trying to determine how to get power without driving to a car supply store to buy any adapters).

I used a multimeter to confirm that my cig lighter continues to supply power with the key off so I didn't want to use that - instead I found that on my Ford Ranger the yellow wire in the wiring harness going into the back of the radio is the + voltage line. I then simply slid the red power wire for the FM modulator into the back of the harness so it was forced next to the end of the yellow wire, taped it in place so it wouldn't be pulled out.

For ground it was easy enough to use the cig lighter.

I didn't need any other adapters for the antenna, just a 1/8 inch headphone jack to RCA cable.

The sound is great! MUCH better than my old FM transmitter from my iPod - my only complaint is the sound is a little weak, but it's the same as when I had the FM transmitter you have to turn up the radio louder than you would for normal radio stations. But like I said I had to do that anyway with the FM transmitter.

So all told it went very easy for me, no extras needed, sound is great.

1Don't Buy  Apr 02, 2007
I bought this item to hook up my iPod to my factory Nissan radio. I have used several FM Modulators in the past and I have found it to be a relatively easy and inexpensive way to go, until now. After all the adaptors, I spent about $100. I should have gone with one of those icruise(?) units instead for $129. The sound quality is horrible. I'm no audio geek. I went from a tape adaptor to this and now back to a tape adaptor because it sounds 100 times better. I emailed Pyle and I will see what they say, but even if they offer to fix/replace it, their web site says they want $15 for return postage...

You may also want to know that Pyle has discontinued this unit in favor of the PLMD3.
