5Great Alarm  Dec 14, 2009 By David Goldman
This has been a great alarm. The range is not quite as advertised, but I easily get about a half mile range in the city. Installation took a while, but it came out flawless. The remote can be a bit confusing at times, but it becomes second nature after a while.

5Great alarm system!  Jun 30, 2010 By Ted Hancock
I got this off Ebay for very cheap and installed it myself. Due to the complexity, and some bad internet advice, it took about 35 hours to investigate, install, and debug. To give you an idea, the wiring diagram for my Scion Xa is 220 pages. The Viper installation instructions are about 60 pages and there were at least 20 websites with often conflicting information about the wiring. The Scion Xa is a simple car and any modern/luxury car installation would be much more complex with bypasses and extra relays.

Now that everything is in, the unit is working flawlessly. With our current 106F heat index, the remote start alone is worth it. My A/C is blowing cold by the time I get to my car. I didn't have keyless entry before so that is also a plus. As indicated elsewhere, the range is no where near 1 mile but I don't care since I have the Smart Start cellular module (AT&T). I control my car with my iPod Touch through wi-fi and can start it from anywhere in the world for $30/yr. That part cost alone cost almost as much as the alarm system.

I've got to admit there is a significant sense of pride from completing a project so complex, that only a relative handfull of untrained individuals have done it successfully. Also, my 3 and 2 year old kids love it and insist upon pushing the buttons to start and unlock the car. I have purchased the 530T window unit and soon won't have to crack the windows manually in this blistering heat.

5Excellent Product!  Nov 22, 2010 By Shaun Huffman
I've been using my Viper alarm for just over a year now, and it is phenominal. The two way communication paired with remote start works great for anyone. The range is better than factory systems and a good percent of aftermarket systems. Remote start on hot days = good, remote start on cold days = great, but the ability to remote start and roll-up the windows on a rainy day is the best. I use mine with the Viper illuminated badge, so far no one has tried to break in, though I did have someone try to open the door when I remote started it while leaving the movie theater. Even in our car the system works as designed with a manual transmission. I would recommend this to anyone and suggest having a professional install (as they have the coders necessary to set everything up properly).

5I'm happy  Feb 04, 2011 By kevwot
I read a lot of reviews prior to the purchase of this alarm. I don't want to be redundant so I'm not going to do a full write up. I do want to express a few items that I think are important to me that were not included in any of the reviews I read.

The first and most important aspect of most alarms is the remote. This alarm's remote is very nice. The screen is amazing and easy to read. However, the remote start button is so easy to press. All other auto starters I've dealt with require you to hold down the start button for at least 2 full seconds. This would have helped prevent accidental starting. To pop the trunk you have to hold the button down.

The only option to protect yourself against accidental starts is using the button lock feature. Once the buttons are locked, you simply press the start button, and then the unlock. Your buttons are now unlocked for 10 seconds. However, the screen turns off and the buttons are still unlocked. This causes another problem.

So to start your car, you press Start, Unlock, Start. And when you are ready to unlock your doors, you press Start, Unlock, Unlock. A nice thing about the lock feature is that it doesn't lock the buttons until any of the buttons are pressed after the ignition is turned off. That way you don't have to unlock the buttons to lock your doors once you arrive at your destination.

This all sounds great, but think about how you unlock the buttons. The first button you press is Start. So, if the buttons have not locked, and you go to unlock the buttons, you either start or turn off your car! Very very stupid.

The other problem I have with this unit is the two way communication. It seems to have very good range. However, sometimes I'll activate the auto start and it says "Out of Range". I'll then move closer to my car and try again. Most times the car actually started on the first try, and when I try again, it turns the car off. It even knows it turns it off because I get the decelerating tones. I've attempted to see if I could get acknowledgment that the car was running in these situations with no luck. In other words, I get the out of range warning and query the inside temp of the car to establish communication. I get my temp (meaning it has connected to the car and within range), but it still doesn't say the car is running. So, I try to start it and it shuts the car off. Very dumb.

Although everything I've mentioned is negative, this is still a really good product. I've used and installed many different remote starters and this one is my favorite so far. I only wish they made to where you have to hold down the Start button for 2 seconds to initiate a remote start.

5Viper 5902 is an excellent alarm  Dec 31, 2010 By Justin & Kristy Banathy
This is a great, very functional alarm. I bought this alarm for my wife's SUV and I installed it myself. It took me many hours to install it because I'm not a pro and I've only installed a handful of alarms. The alarm doesn't come with install instructions, just a quick wiring guide that tells you what the colors of the wires are inputs/outputs for so I recommend getting it installed by a pro unless you've installed at least a few semi-complicated alarms. It has great range, lots of possible add on sensors, and really cool remotes that tell you all sorts of useful stuff. I don't like how large the OLED primary remote is. The surface area of the face of the remote isn't much bigger than most but the remote is really thick and quite bulky. My wife just puts it in her purse so no biggie but when I take her car somewhere I use the secondary remote that doesn't have the color OLED screen. The secondary remote is half as thick and smaller as well; it's actually pretty small so it fits great in my pocket without me feeling like I'm carrying around a TV remote (kind of exaggerating). The alarm has a really small status LED built into the "command center" which is the antenna/valet switch unit. This is not the best idea because the LED has to be located wherever the antenna is which is likely going to be above the center rear view mirror. Not so good for visibility of the LED. I ended up buying a second DEI LED and wiring it in parallel with the factory one by splicing into the wires going to the "command center". The remote start works flawlessly (I suggest using the tach wire instead of the virtual tach which uses voltage readings although I had the car successfully start using both methods. You can also get a lot of help with the installation if you decide to do it your self by going to the12volt.com, a forum for people doing auto installs of alarms, stereos, etc... What else can I say, it's DEI; a great brand that makes some of the most respected alarms on the market. I've only had DEI alarms on my own cars (7 cars now) and installed them on the majority of those and have never had ANY problems with them and have never had a car broken in to as of yet. Knock on wood. :)
